Dr. Urmila Pai, Author of “Nervous Nellie: A Book for Children Who Worry”, visits Sappo School

On January 15th, Dr. Urmila Pai, Board Certified Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist, visited Sappo School and conducted a reading of her book, “Nervous Nellie: A Book for Children Who Worry”. During the reading, Dr. Pai answered questions and encouraged conversation amongst students, in addition to a guided activity focused on managing anxiety and recognizing feelings.

photo 2 (9)Students were encouraged to recognize and identify feelings, and isolate moments throughout the book in which Nellie, the main character, experienced anxiety and feelings of nervousness. They were then encouraged to recognize moments of anxiety and nervousness within their own life and share their strategies for conquering these feelings. Some examples of nervousness amongst peers included public speaking and riding rollercoasters. Students appeared to relate to one another while identifying feelings and sharing their stories.

photo 5 (4)Dr. Pai currently maintains a practice in Huntington and Jericho. As one of the few female child and adolescent psychiatrists practicing in Long Island, she has extensive experience in treating patients with a wide range of psychiatric disorders. Dr. Pai serves as a consultant to school districts in Long Island and serves on the executive board as the medical consultant to the Long Island Professionals ADHD Consortium.
