New Student Orientation

blog 36Sappo School welcomed its newest arrivals on Tuesday evening (September 2nd). New Student Orientation marked the first official event at the school’s new Commack location and teachers and staff were on hand acting as proud parents, welcoming incoming students and their actual proud parents to the new home.

Sappo has added 16 new students bringing the total enrollment to 52 students for the 2014-15 school year.

Director Joanne Sappo as well as each teacher took the time to introduce themselves and tell the newcomers what they will do for them. They discussed not only what the students could expect academically, but how they will create a learning environment where they will feel safe and comfortable. An emphasis was placed on creating a warm, lighthearted atmosphere. To that end, Mrs. Yoches, who is returning to Sappo School to teach Spanish, introduced herself in Spanish, much to everyone’s amusement.

The teachers also expressed their excitement at having so many new faces and starting school at the new building, even trying to outdo one another as to who was most excited about the year ahead. “I’m twice as excited as they are,” Ms. Ruggiero said at one point referring to her colleagues.

Mr. Albano and his wife Yong led the welcoming for the International students and took them on a guided tour of the school.

Perhaps the highlight of the evening was having a group of current students, led by Michael Shelton and assisted by Michael Wichrowski and Christopher Hayes, on hand as student hosts to personally welcome the newcomers to the Sappo family and lend their perspective as to what the incoming students can expect. Although, their role as tour guides was severely diminished, given that they were just as new to the building as the new students. As Ms. Sappo said, “Why don’t you show them around, so you can get lost together.”
